We are delighted to communicate that CODATA Executive Committee members Shaily Gandhi, Barend Mons, Virginia Murray and Cyrus Walther, as well as longstanding International Data Policy Committee member, Paul Berkman, have been honoured as ISC Fellows.
From the announcement:
- The International Science Council is delighted to announce it has appointed 100 new ISC Fellows, in recognition of outstanding contributions to promoting science as a global public good.
- The Fellowship is the highest honour that can be conferred on an individual by the International Science Council (ISC). Together with the 123 individuals that were appointed in 2022, the new ISC Fellows will support the Council in its mission at a critical moment for science and sustainability for science as we enter the UN’s International Decade of Sciences for Sustainable Development (IDSSD) in 2024.
- The new Fellows include eminent social and natural scientists, engineers and thought leaders who have made impactful contributions to science and society. They hail from different countries and regions, disciplines, sectors and career stages; having been nominated by ISC Members and existing Fellows, and by partners

- Barend Mons, is Professor in Biosemantics at the Human Genetics department of Leiden University Medical Center was CODATA President from 2018-2023 and now has the role of Past President. He recently served on the ISC Technical Advisory Group that produced the report and recommendations “A Model for Implementing Mission Science for Sustainability”.
- Professor Virginia Murray is Head of Global Disaster Risk Reduction at the UK Health Security Agency and has been a member of the CODATA Executive Committee since 2018. Virginia has led the ISC-UNDRR work on the Hazard Information Profiles.
- Dr. Shaily Gandhi is Manager of IT and Geospatial Solutions at CEPT Research and Development Foundation, CEPT University; she has been one of the leads of the CODATA Connect Early Career Group since 2019 and sits on our Executive Committee in an ex officio capacity.
- Cyrus Pan Walther is President of the International Association of Physics Students and was elected to the CODATA Executive Committee at our General Assembly in Salzburg as the candidate of the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics.
- Professor Paul Berkman is Director of the Science Diplomacy Center, Tufts University and a member of the CODATA International Data Policy Committee since 2019. He was one of the authors of ‘Open Science for a Global Transformation’, the CODATA’s contribution to the UNESCO consultation on Open Science.
