CODATA is delighted to communicate that our colleagues at the Data Documentation Initiative have officially published Version 1.0 of DDI Cross-Domain Integration (DDI-CDI)!

About DDI-CDI

DDI-CDI extends traditional DDI metadata to describe data beyond the social, behavioral, and economic (SBE) domains, addressing the need for broader capabilities. It supports descriptions of event and sensor data (“long” data), key-value data (often associated with “big” data and no-SQL data), and multi-dimensional data. By integrating these with traditional “wide” (or “rectangular”) DDI data descriptions, DDI-CDI enables the management and production of integrated data sets from diverse sources.

Additionally, DDI-CDI facilitates the documentation of generic processes, allowing for clear descriptions of the steps involved in data integration. To ensure compatibility with varying technologies and standards used across domains, DDI-CDI is designed to interoperate with a wide range of web standards, supporting both XML- and RDF-based syntax representations.

Acknowledgments

The publication of DDI-CDI Version 1.0 would not have been possible without the DDI-CDI Working Group, led by Arofan Gregory (Chair), and the DDI Technical Committee, whose efforts ensured a rigorous and collaborative development process.

CODATA would like to congratulate the DDI community on this achievement, and extend our sincere gratitude to everyone involved in this achievement and to the DDI Alliance members whose support made this development possible.

DDI-CDI, CODATA, CDIF and WorldFAIR+

CODATA has played a prominent role among those DDI members who have encouraged and supported the development of DDI-CDI.  This has included our collaboration in a series of Dagstuhl workshops, our support for an important consultative webinar series, and coordinating an EC-funded project to explore how DDI-CDI could contribute to interdisciplinary research in the European Open Science Cloud.

By supporting data description for integration, DDI-CDI plays a central role in the Cross-Domain Interoperability Framework (CDIF) and a set of CDIF implementation projects under the banner of WorldFAIR+.

This is a considerable achievement and we would like to congratulate everyone involved, in particular the members of the Working Group who have contributed so much to the modelling and documentation.  Particular kudos must go to our colleague, Arofan Gregory, who has been the guiding force of this endeavour.
