The Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) indicators are often couched in highly technical language. Our goal with these guides is to make it easier for citizen science groups to engage in data collection activities that can support selected SDG indicators. These “how to” guides provide guidance to CS groups on what measurements are necessary in order to contribute to SDG indicators in a number of different issue areas (e.g., water, health, slums, biodiversity). We clarify (“translate”) the data and indicator needs of the UN and national governments into actionable quantities, measurable by CS initiatives and projects, building on the UN SDG metadata repository.
In 2020, Guides were prepared for the following indicators:
- SDG 3: Good Health and Wellbeing, indicator 3.1.1 Maternal mortality ratio
- SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities, indicator 11.6.1 Proportion of municipal solid waste collected and managed in controlled facilities out of total municipal waste generated, by cities
- SDG 13: Climate Action, indicator 13.1.2 Number of countries that adopt and implement national disaster risk reduction strategies in line with the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030
- SDG 15: Life on Land, indicator 15.5.1 Red List Index.
