CODATA is participating in the EU-funded research project, Research Data Alliance facilitation of Targeted International working Groups for EOSC-related Research solutions (RDA TIGER)
What is the Research Data Alliance?
Are you a researcher or innovator working with data? Whether you produce, share or re-use data, you may have faced some challenges along the way. Or perhaps, you may want to play a part in advancing open science and making a positive impact in data science? The Research Data Alliance (RDA) is here to help! This non-profit international organisation offers a space for meaningful discussions and knowledge exchange, where people from all fields come together to address some of society’s grand challenges on a global scale. From the Interest Groups (IGs) to Working Groups (WGs), you’ll find a community ready to collaborate and innovate in data science.
Why RDA TIGER?
Launched in 2023, the RDA TIGER project is connecting the RDA networks to make even greater progress. RDA TIGER already supports over 20 different RDA WGs by offering a variety of services that are listed on the RDA TIGER Services page. In this way, as shown in the figure, RDA TIGER supports a diverse range of RDA WGs, from social sciences to engineering and technology, creating a dynamic melting pot of expertise that fosters collaboration and innovation.
RDA TIGER project focuses specifically on supporting the activities and outcomes of WGs that address issues, challenges and priorities to the EOSC and the European Open Science initiatives. The EOSC is a major European initiative designed to create a web of FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable) data and services for science across Europe. This federated virtual environment will allow researchers to easily find, share, process, analyse and reuse FAIR research data across borders and disciplines.
What are CODATA’s contributions?
CODATA plays a key role in two areas of the RDA TIGER project: Work Package (WP) 3, “Landscape and engagement” and WP5, “Facilitation service”. Because of its global reach and connections with international science programmes and intergovernmental initiatives, CODATA is well-placed to provide WGs with valuable background knowledge of Open Science activities in related fields. The watchword is: do not reinvent the wheel! This means that no WG should duplicate existing work, and any gaps and emerging challenges in the landscape should be identified and addressed.
Led by CODATA, the WP3 activity focuses on mapping the overall Open Science and FAIR landscape to support the RDA WGs backed by the RDA TIGER project to fulfil their goals. WP3 expands its analysis beyond the consortium to identify similar initiatives or potential collaborators, targeting national, European and international efforts in the field.
If you’d like to learn more about CODATA’s contribution to WP3, please check out the WP3 deliverables available on the RDA TIGER Zenodo community page. CODATA contributed to the first landscape report and led the second landscape report. Additionally, a lot of RDA TIGER landscaping work happens in responsive mode to support WGs. These briefings are not public but have been very much appreciated.
WP5, led by RDA, oversees the smooth operation of the WGs supported by RDA TIGER. For CODATA, this involves assigning a facilitator to help three specific WGs: 1) Mapping the Landscape of Digital Research Tools II (MaLDReTH II); 2) Health Data Commons GORC profile; and 3) Small Uncrewed Aircraft and Autonomous Platforms Data. In this role, CODATA serves as the main point of contact between these WGs and the wider RDA TIGER project, ensuring seamless coordination and support.
