As we mark 2025 as the “Year of the Glacier,” the urgency to address the rapid retreat of these critical ice reserves has never been greater. Glaciers are essential for water security, ecosystems, and the livelihoods of millions, yet their accelerated decline due to climate change is already leading to severe impacts, including water scarcity and glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs).
This webinar will explore the vital role of innovative financing in advancing glacier adaptation efforts. By harnessing comprehensive data and strengthening cross-border collaboration through regional climate knowledge platforms, we can turn information into actionable insights for policymakers, communities, and investors. Understanding the diverse impacts on local populations from those relying on glacial meltwater to those living under the threat of GLOFs is crucial. Inclusive, community-centered approaches are key to building long-term resilience.
Our focus will be to discuss data-driven strategies and innovative financing mechanisms that can help protect the world’s glaciers and safeguard the communities that depend on the cryosphere.
You will each be invited to speak for a few minutes on your perspective and work on glacier adaptation and financing, after which we will open a short moderated discussion. If you want to share the title of your talk before please feel free to do that.
