Webinar: Glacier Adaptation and financing

Date: 3 March 2026, Time: 9:00 am to 9:45 am CEST

As we mark 2025 as the “Year of the Glacier,” the urgency to address the rapid retreat of these critical ice reserves has never been greater. Glaciers are essential for water security, ecosystems, and the livelihoods of millions, yet their accelerated decline due to climate change is already leading to severe impacts, including water scarcity and glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs).

The “Glacier Adaptation and Financing” webinar brought together global experts to spotlight the urgent need for action in protecting the world’s glaciers and strengthening cryospheric resilience . Moderated by Dr. Shaily Gandhi, the session featured distinguished speakers including Dr. Anil Mishra (UNESCO), Dr. Dhiraj Pradhananga (Tribhuvan University, Nepal), Dr. Miriam Jackson (Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate), and Dr. Bapon Fakhruddin (Green Climate Fund).

The discussion highlighted the accelerating loss of glaciers worldwide, the transition from the International Year of Glaciers’ Preservation 2025 to the Decade of Action for Cryospheric Sciences (2025–2034), and the far-reaching impacts of glacier retreat on water security, disaster risk, and vulnerable mountain communities. Speakers emphasized shifts from snowfall to rainfall, expanding glacial lakes, and increasing risks of glacier lake outburst floods (GLOFs).

A strong focus was placed on scaling up monitoring networks, community-based observation initiatives, innovative financing mechanisms, and blended climate finance solutions. The session concluded with a powerful call for collaboration uniting science, policy, finance, and local leadership to observe, predict, engage, finance, and ultimately protect our mountain cryosphere for future generations.
