Research Data Winter School: 12–15 JUNE 2018, THE UNIVERSITY OF QUEENSLAND, BRISBANE

Supported by the Theo Murphy Initiative, the Australian Academy of Science, in association with Committee on Data of the International Council for Science (CODATA) and the Research Data Alliance (RDA), have developed a Research Data Science Winter School program that aims to teach and refresh some of the most relevant range of skills relating to research data science for early- and mid-career researchers (EMCRs).
The winter school brings together 15 EMCRs from different disciplines, 13 from Australia, one from Indonesia and one from Papua New Guinea. During the four-day intensive program, participants learn how to manage, curate, share and use data that is core to research, acquire basic programming and data analytic skills, and learn key considerations associated with research data by engaging with experienced data scientists.
The Winter School is convened by Professor Jane Hunter, University of Queensland and member of the CODATA Executive Committee.  The programme is available here.
Dr Hugh Shanahan, co-chair of the CODATA-RDA Schools of Research Data Science initiative and leading the development of a GO FAIR Implementation Network for Training is the Opening Speaker.
Hugh has a deep background in theoretical and computational physics, coupled with a more recent move into computational biology. He collaborates closely with experimental biologists to develop an understanding, at a molecular level, of how organisms function. His specialties include computational and theoretical Physics, computational biology, protein-DNA interactions, and cloud computing. He has been one of the driving forces behind the successful CODATA-RDA Schools of Research Data Science initiative.
