The CODATA member organisation for Chile is the Data Observatory. Chile joined CODATA in 2025 and is in the process to establish a National Committee.
The Data Observatory (DO) serves as a nexus between government agencies, research institutions, and industry. Our mission is to develop data-centric solutions, tools, and capacities that address national priorities and global challenges. DO’s research areas include:
- Astronomy: Leveraging Chile’s world-class observation facilities to handle massive astronomical datasets.
- Earth Observation: Collecting and analysing satellite and remote-sensing data to address environmental issues, climate change, and land-use planning.
- Natural Resources: Informing sustainable management of water, forests, minerals, and marine ecosystems through data-driven insights.
- Society: Enhancing social policy development by providing data-based evidence on health, education, urban planning, and more.
Our projects have a significant impact on the public sector, guiding evidence-based decisions and influencing policies on sustainability, education, and innovation. By adopting and promoting FAIR standards, we intend to enhance interoperability and data sharing within and beyond Chile’s borders, ultimately driving better, more transparent decision-making in government and society at large.
Objectives and Activities
New national FAIR data policy has been launched under the stewardship of the Data Observatory in 2025. This policy outlines key objectives and standards for scientific data management and sharing, with a view to eventually establishing a comprehensive national data policy that mandates FAIR compliance and open practices across sectors.
The National Committee’s engagement with CODATA is envisioned through:
- Participation in Task Groups and Working Groups: Contributing our domain expertise and gleaning best practices for FAIR data management.
- Capacity Building: Organising local and regional events, workshops, and training programs to disseminate CODATA’s knowledge base.
- Policy Development: Assisting in policy discussions that shape the global data ecosystem and sharing our national experience in FAIR implementation.
