CDIF Releases Initial Converters for Domain Standards

Resources for the Cross Domain Interoperability Framework (CDIF) have just been expanded to include a series of converters for metadata encoded in a range of domain standards. These converters are developed in Python, and provide transformations both to and from the relevant CDIF profiles. Each is accompanied by a set of example metadata. The conversions cover Croissant ML, Science on Schema.org (SOSO), DDI Codebook, the FAIR2 specification, DCAT, the NASA Common Metadata Repository (CMR) Unified Metadata Model – Collections, DDI-CDI, and RO Crate.

The mappings used in the converters are published in the Simple Standard for Sharing Ontological Mappings (SSSOM) format, for modification and reuse. The converters use a combination of SSSOM mapping and transforms implemented by the python code; the documentation for each converted explains the workflow.

These converters have been developed using Claude Code, in support of various CDIF implementation projects. They are offered as a way to help people understand how CDIF can be employed as an integration layer between the standards used by different domains and infrastructures, fulfilling its role as a FAIR “lingua franca”. While these are not necessarily production quality, they can serve as the basis for the development of tools in other projects, and as a useful way to explore CDIF in a practical fashion.

All the converters are available under open-source licensing: the coversion software under Apache 2.0, and the other resources under CC BY International. The set of converters will continue to grow over time.
