and the benefits of time to think"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I was in the Hague yesterday (Monday 20 January) for a meeting with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dans.knaw.nl\/en\" target=\"_blank\">DANS<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/datacentrum.3tu.nl\/en\/home\/\" target=\"_blank\">3TU Data.Centrum<\/a>.\u00a0 It was a generously accorded opportunity for me to communicate plans for the future of CODATA and discuss membership.\u00a0 I have worked a lot with Dutch colleagues over the past few years in the context of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.knowledge-exchange.info\/\" target=\"_blank\">Knowledge Exchange<\/a> and I think some inspiring work is going on in the Netherlands.\u00a0 In particular, I am impressed by the partnership of these two organisations in Research Data Netherlands and also in the way DANS and 3TU have aimed to respond to the <a href=\"http:\/\/cordis.europa.eu\/fp7\/ict\/e-infrastructure\/docs\/hlg-sdi-report.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Riding the Wave<\/a> report to develop a partnership and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dans.knaw.nl\/sites\/default\/files\/file\/DANS%20FO-BO-model%20UK%20V1%20DEF%20web.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">a federated data infrastructure based upon the distribution of back office and front office functions<\/a>.<a href=\"https:\/\/codata.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/DANS-FO-BO.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-98\" alt=\"DANS FO-BO\" src=\"https:\/\/codata.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/DANS-FO-BO.jpg\" width=\"607\" height=\"439\" srcset=\"https:\/\/codata.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/DANS-FO-BO.jpg 1012w, https:\/\/codata.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/DANS-FO-BO-300x216.jpg 300w, https:\/\/codata.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/DANS-FO-BO-624x451.jpg 624w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 607px) 100vw, 607px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The occasion for this visit was an excellent symposium by DANS visiting fellows, Andrew Treloar <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/atreloar\" target=\"_blank\">@atreloar<\/a> and Herbert van der Sompel <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hvdsomp\" target=\"_blank\">@hvdsomp<\/a>, on\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1fPFVXY\" target=\"_blank\">Riding the Wave and The Scholarly Archive of the Future<\/a>. \u00a0The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.slideshare.net\/atreloar\/scholarly-archiveofthefuture\" target=\"_blank\">joint presentation<\/a>, and the structured discussions, were the result of\u00a0ten days of dedicated thinking and working together.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_100\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/codata.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Bebpp7aIAAA2qO_.jpg-large.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-100\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-100\" alt=\"@atreloar presents dimensions of change in scholarly practice and communications.\" src=\"https:\/\/codata.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Bebpp7aIAAA2qO_.jpg-large-300x225.jpeg\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/codata.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Bebpp7aIAAA2qO_.jpg-large-300x225.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/codata.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Bebpp7aIAAA2qO_.jpg-large-624x468.jpeg 624w, https:\/\/codata.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Bebpp7aIAAA2qO_.jpg-large.jpeg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-100\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">@atreloar presents dimensions of change in scholarly practice and communications.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Andrew and Herbert took as a starting point four functions of research communication suggested by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.physik.uni-oldenburg.de\/conferences\/crisp97\/roosendaal.html\" target=\"_blank\">Rosendaal and Geurts in 1997<\/a>: registration, certification, awareness and archiving.\u00a0 They analysed changes in each of these functions and came up with a typology characterising dimensions of change in scholarly practice and communications. \u00a0The key features of these changes are an increasing variety in the object of communication and a disaggregation of the processes that comprise communication &#8211; and &#8216;archiving&#8217; infrastructure<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The implications of this for &#8216;recording&#8217; and &#8216;archiving&#8217; infrastructure were represented in a diagram. \u00a0The challenge for data archives is to interface and interoperate effectively with new, emerging, disaggregated systems for scholarly communication, filtering, and annotation &#8211;
