{"id":417,"date":"2015-07-01T15:24:42","date_gmt":"2015-07-01T15:24:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/codata.org\/blog\/?p=417"},"modified":"2015-07-01T15:28:11","modified_gmt":"2015-07-01T15:28:11","slug":"rescuing-legacy-data-for-future-science","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/codata.org\/blog\/2015\/07\/01\/rescuing-legacy-data-for-future-science\/","title":{"rendered":"Rescuing Legacy Data for Future Science"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>This post is by Elizabeth Griffin, chair of the CODATA Data at Risk Task Group.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/codata.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/EGU_LOGO.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-419 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/codata.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/EGU_LOGO-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"EGU_LOGO\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>Every two years, climate scientists at Elsevier (New York) and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.iedadata.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">IEDA (Integrated Earth Data\u00a0Applications, Columbia University)<\/a>, jointly support and award the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.elsevier.com\/physical-sciences\/earth-and-planetary-sciences\/the-2015-international-data-rescue-award-in-the-geosciences\" target=\"_blank\">International Data Rescue Award in the Geosciences<\/a> for the best project\u00a0that describes the &#8216;rescue&#8217; of heritage\u00a0data in the context of the geosciences. The result of the competition for\u00a02014-15 was announced at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.egu2015.eu\/home.html\" target=\"_blank\">the annual meeting of the European Geosciences Union\u00a0(EGU)<\/a>, held in April in Vienna. The strength and scope of the competition had\u00a0increased significantly since the 2013 one.<\/p>\n<p>A shortlist of four was announced\u00a0in Vienna: with three receiving &#8216;honourable mention&#8217;. \u00a0The winner of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.elsevier.com\/physical-sciences\/earth-and-planetary-sciences\/the-2015-international-data-rescue-award-in-the-geosciences\" target=\"_blank\">2015 International Data Rescue Award<\/a> in the Geosciences was <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bgs.ac.uk\/collections\/jiscGB3DTypeFossils.html\" target=\"_blank\">British Macrofossils Online<\/a><\/strong>, a <a href=\"http:\/\/gb3dtypefossils.blogspot.fr\/\" target=\"_blank\">Jisc-funded<\/a> project\u00a0from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bgs.ac.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\">British Geological Survey<\/a>\u00a0to create a fully electronic catalogue of all the fossil collections in UK museums and similar repositories. The project team consisted of Mike Howe, Caroline Buttler, Dan Pemberton, Eliza Howlett, Tim McCormick, Simon Harris and Michela Contessi working alongside a number of other contributors.<a href=\"https:\/\/codata.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/2015-International-Data-Rescue-Award.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-420\" src=\"https:\/\/codata.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/2015-International-Data-Rescue-Award.jpg\" alt=\"2015-International-Data-Rescue-Award\" width=\"720\" height=\"155\" srcset=\"https:\/\/codata.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/2015-International-Data-Rescue-Award.jpg 720w, https:\/\/codata.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/2015-International-Data-Rescue-Award-300x65.jpg 300w, https:\/\/codata.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/2015-International-Data-Rescue-Award-624x134.jpg 624w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 720px) 100vw, 720px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>During the same ceremony, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/journal\/22142428\/6\" target=\"_blank\">a Special Issue of an online journal, GeoResJ<\/a>, was\u00a0launched: it was given over entirely to descriptions of data rescue projects,\u00a0and featured a six-page introductory article by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.codata.org\/task-groups\/data-at-risk\" target=\"_blank\">CODATA &#8220;Data At Risk&#8221; Task\u00a0Group (DAR-TG) team<\/a>, entitled <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S2214242815000121\" target=\"_blank\">&#8216;When are Old Data New Data?&#8217;<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-418\" src=\"https:\/\/codata.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/GeoResJ.gif\" alt=\"GeoResJ\" width=\"160\" height=\"212\" \/>Opening the meeting in Vienna, Dr Elizabeth Griffin (Chair, DAR-TG) explained\u00a0and illustrated the considerable\u00a0scientific importance of recovering scientific\u00a0information that was recorded before the electronic age, and what CODATA\u00a0(through its TG) was attempting to do towards stimulating many more data\u00a0recovery efforts. The visibility which the evening afforded to the DAR-TG and\u00a0to CODATA itself was very valuable, the event presenting a memorable complement\u00a0of rationale, endeavour and achievement. Open publicity of this nature is one\u00a0of the goals of the DAR-TG; it is essential for spreading the word about\u00a0undertaking and (then) coordinating efforts to bring archived, nearly lost, or\u00a0almost unreadable data back into full service.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This post is by Elizabeth Griffin, chair of the CODATA Data at Risk Task Group.
