Well 2023, and looking forward to 2024!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A message from Simon Hodson, Executive Director.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As is customary, before taking a break for the (northern hemisphere) mid-winter holidays and the New Year, I would like to highlight <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">some<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of CODATA\u2019s achievements in the year that is ending and look forward to activities in the coming year.\u00a0 Highlights include the progress of the WorldFAIR project, an ambitious expansion of the International Data Policy Committee, a successful completion of the first phase of the Global Open Science Cloud initiative, and a Festival of Data at International Data Week.\u00a0 The CODATA General Assembly elected a wonderful new President and Executive Committee, and approved an updated Strategic Plan which gives the organisation a strong sense of direction for the next four years.<\/span><\/p>\n<h1><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/codata.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/worldfair-logo-300x287.png\" width=\"251\" height=\"240\" \/>WorldFAIR: \u2018global cooperation on FAIR data policy and practice\u2019<\/span><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/worldfair-project.eu\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WorldFAIR project<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has become the flagship for our Decadal Programme \u2018Making Data Work for Global Grand Challenges\u2019.\u00a0 As coordinator of the project, and working with a fantastic consortium, we have been further refining a methodology and approach to advance implementation of the FAIR principles, and in particular those relating to interoperability and reusability, in a range of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/worldfair-project.eu\/case-studies\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">domain and cross-domain research areas<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The WorldFAIR project was active at the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/worldfair-project.eu\/2023\/04\/14\/worldfair-at-rda-plenary-20-synopsis\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">March RDA Plenary in Gothenburg<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, at the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/worldfair-project.eu\/2023\/10\/05\/cross-domain-interoperability-use-cases-reflections-from-the-eosc-symposium-2023\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">EOSC Symposium in September<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/worldfair-project.eu\/2023\/11\/10\/idw2023-a-festival-of-data-with-the-worldfair-project\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">International Data Week in Salzburg in October<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0 It was also featured in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/codata.org\/events\/science-and-policy-workshops\/towards-a-fairer-world\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">UNESCO-hosted event \u2018Towards a FAIRer World\u2019<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0 A series of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/worldfair-project.eu\/the-worldfair-project-webinar-series-presenting-project-outputs\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">webinars<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has been showcasing the work of the project and in particular that of the case studies.\u00a0 You can access <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/worldfair-project.eu\/project-outcomes-and-documents\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WorldFAIR deliverables<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from the website or our <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/zenodo.org\/communities\/worldfair-project?q=&amp;l=list&amp;p=1&amp;s=10&amp;sort=newest\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zenodo collection<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0 As we head towards the end of the project, there will be a lot going on, so please do sign up to our <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/worldfair-project.eu\/worldfair-newsletter\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">newsletter<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the significant outputs will be the Cross-Domain Interoperability Framework, a set of practical recommendations for how to address the functional requirements to service FAIR data and metadata for cross-domain use.\u00a0 The first draft module on \u2018Discoverability\u2019 is currently <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/worldfair-project.eu\/2023\/12\/05\/cross-domain-interoperability-framework-cdif-discovery-module-v01-draft-for-public-consultation\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">available for public review<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and will be followed by modules on \u2018Access\u2019, \u2018Integration\u2019, \u2018Controlled Vocabularies\u2019, \u2018Mappings\u2019 and \u2018Provenance\u2019.\u00a0 The CDIF development was considerably advanced by this year\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ddi-alliance.atlassian.net\/wiki\/spaces\/DDI4\/pages\/2946531350\/2023+Defining+a+Core+Metadata+Framework+for+Cross-Domain+Data+Sharing+and+Reuse\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dagstuhl Workshop \u2018Defining a Core Metadata Framework for Cross-Domain Data Sharing and Reuse\u2019<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although the European Commission funded project will conclude at the end of May 2024, we are already exploring how to expand and sustain the initiative in the form of \u2018WorldFAIR+\u2019.\u00a0 Thanks to a grant from the International Science Council, two further case studies relating to data in emergencies will be launched.\u00a0 We are optimistic of adding a further case study in earth sciences as part of a collaboration with IUGS and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ddeworld.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Deeptime Digital Earth<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0 And discussions are ongoing with a number of partners, including ARDC, the Helmholtz Metadata Collaboration, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/codata.org\/cessda-eric-and-codata-unite-forces-to-propel-interdisciplinary-research-and-data-advancement\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CESSDA<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, KISTI and others.<\/span><\/p>\n<h1><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/codata.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/fvpr.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-2878\" src=\"https:\/\/codata.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/fvpr.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"253\" \/><\/a>FAIR Vocabularies in Population Research<\/span><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Highly relevant to the work of the WorldFAIR project and to implementing the FAIR principles in different domains was the work of the joint IUSSP-CODATA Working Group on FAIR Vocabularies in Population Research.\u00a0 Ably chaired by George Alter, and marshalling subject and technical expertise from a range of partners including UN Stats, OECD, SDMX and the DDI Alliance, the WG <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/codata.org\/initiatives\/working-groups\/previous-working-groups\/iussp-codata-working-group-on-fair-vocabularies\/fair-vocabularies-in-population-research-report-and-webinar\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">published its concluding report<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in June 2023.\u00a0 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.5281\/zenodo.7818157\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FAIR Vocabularies in Population Research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has been particularly well received and makes recommendations for SDMX, the DDI Alliance, IPUMS, as well as IUSSP and CODATA.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h1><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">International Data Policy Committee: data policy in times of crisis and expansion for a new challenge!<\/span><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The topic of data policy for emergency situations has also been an important theme for the International Data Policy Committee (IDPC).\u00a0 Hosted at UNESCO on 29 March, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/codata.org\/events\/science-and-policy-workshops\/towards-a-fairer-world\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2018Towards a FAIRer World\u2019<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> examined the underlying ethical, human rights, and humanitarian frameworks needed to support data policy during crisis situations in an open science context, respecting the FAIR (data stewardship) and CARE (ethical) data governance principles.\u00a0 This event led directly to the creation of a UNESCO and CODATA Working Group to develop contributions to the UNESCO Open Science Toolkit to assist with Data Policy for Times of Crisis.\u00a0 The results, in the form of guidance, a checklist, and a factsheet, will be launched at the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/unstats.un.org\/unsd\/undataforum\/index.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">UN World Data Forum<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Medell\u00edn, Colombia in November 2024.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Under the tireless leadership of Francis Crawley, the IDPC has undergone a transformation and renewal.\u00a0 The IDPC\u2019s new Action Plan identifies seven topics for action:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Data policy for data quality, reliability, and integrity<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Data policy for science in crisis situations<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Data policy for education<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Data policy for AI<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Data policy for Open Science<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Data policy for the publication and communication of science<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Data policy for specific populations<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To meet this ambitious agenda, a call was issued for new membership, and the IDPC has been considerably expanded.\u00a0 It now comprises over 60 leading experts from over 30 countries.\u00a0 Task Groups will be formed to address each of the topics.<\/span><\/p>\n<h1><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Global Open Science Cloud Initiative<\/span><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/isosc.casconf.cn\/page\/1666323611906084864\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">International Symposium on Open Science Clouds<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 4-6 September 2023 marked a successful conclusion to the first phase of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/codata.org\/initiatives\/decadal-programme2\/global-open-science-cloud\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Global Open Science Clouds (GOSC)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> initiative, which rests on a strong partnership between CODATA and the GOSC International Programme Office, hosted at CNIC.\u00a0 A significant community of cooperation has been created, with representatives from the major Open Science infrastructure initiatives around the world.\u00a0 There is palpable enthusiasm for continuing the cooperation and there was general agreement that this should be the first of a series of similar events.\u00a0 The GOSC Steering Group is now exploring the possibility of holding an ISOSC on the African continent in early 2025.<\/span><\/p>\n<h1><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Advancing data science and the science of data<\/span><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Marking <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/datascience.codata.org\/collections\/20-years-of-data-science\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">20 Years of the Data Science Journal<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the CODATA DSJ published a collection of articles and essays exploring the history of data science and the relationship between data science and the science of data.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/codata.org\/initiatives\/data-skills\/codata-connect\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CODATA Connect Early Career Working Group<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has continued its excellent work, completing a podcast series on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/codata.org\/initiatives\/data-skills\/codata-connect\/data-for-disaster-risk-reduction-podcast-series\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Data for Disaster Risk Reduction<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, in partnership with the CODATA Task Group on FAIR Data for Disaster Risk Research, and launching a new one on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/crdf.org.in\/podcast\/open-geo-ai-unveiling-satellite-insights-through-open-data#:~:text=This%20podcast%20series%2C%20'Open%20Geo,decision%2Dmaking%20and%20societal%20progress.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Open Geo AI<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/codata.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/podcastblog.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2877 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/codata.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/podcastblog.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"762\" height=\"276\" srcset=\"https:\/\/codata.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/podcastblog.jpg 762w, https:\/\/codata.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/podcastblog-300x109.jpg 300w, https:\/\/codata.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/podcastblog-624x226.jpg 624w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 762px) 100vw, 762px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meanwhile, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.datascienceschools.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CODATA-RDA Schools of Research Data Science<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> had another successful year, running an in person school at the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/indico.ictp.it\/event\/10195\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ICTP in Trieste<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/datascienceschools.co.za\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">online version in South Africa<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0 Both <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/codata.org\/call-for-nominations-or-applications-to-join-the-codata-connect-early-career-and-alumni-network\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CODATA Connect<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.datascienceschools.org\/call-for-new-co-chairs\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CODATA-RDA SORDS<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have recently issued calls for new leadership and participants, so there will be exciting opportunities going forward.<\/span><\/p>\n<h1><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A Festival of Data and a New Era for CODATA<\/span><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The major conference of the year was the fourth <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.internationaldataweek.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">International Data Week<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, in Salzburg, Austria, 23-26 October.\u00a0 Combining the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rd-alliance.org\/plenary-meetings\/past-plenaries\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research Data Alliance\u2019s Plenary Meeting<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scidatacon.org\/IDW-2023-Salzburg\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SciDataCon<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, organised by CODATA and WDS, IDW 2023 attracted 834 participants (702 in person and 132 online) from 48 countries.\u00a0 The feedback on the plenary sessions and the breakout sessions has been excellent.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/codata.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/MerceCrosas-head-300x264.jpg\" width=\"244\" height=\"215\" \/>IDW was followed by the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/codata.org\/events\/general-assembly\/general-assembly-2023\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CODATA General Assembly<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 27-28 October.\u00a0 The GA elected <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/codata.org\/merce-crosas-elected-codata-president\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Merc\u00e8 Crosas<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as CODATA President.\u00a0 Currently head of Computational Social Sciences at the Barcelona Supercomputing Centre, Merc\u00e8 brings to the role a remarkable range of experience from a career that spans astrophysics, biotech and software startups, social sciences, and Open Public Data.\u00a0 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/codata.org\/2023-codata-general-assembly-elects-strong-executive-committee-and-approves-eight-task-groups\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A strong Executive Committee was elected<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, notable by considerably improved gender balance and a prominent representation from international scientific union.\u00a0 Barend Mons bade <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/codata.org\/blog\/2023\/12\/15\/the-fair-well-message-by-codata-past-president-barend-mons\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FAIRwell<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, becoming Past President and saying that he was now \u2018Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Retired\u2019.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The General Assembly also <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/codata.org\/2023-codata-general-assembly-elects-strong-executive-committee-and-approves-eight-task-groups\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">approved five new Task Groups, three continuing Task Groups and one new Working Group<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0 Alongside the strategic activities described above, each of these groups will contribute to the updated strategic plan, which was approved by the GA.\u00a0 To be launched in the new year, Making Data Work to Improve our World, the CODATA Strategic Plan 2023-2027 presents our vision of a world in which science is empowered to address universal challenges through the transparent, trustworthy and equitable use of data and information. The strategy describes four strategic priorities which CODATA will pursue in order to help realise this vision.\u00a0 In sum, we need to make data work to improve our world.<a href=\"https:\/\/codata.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/ec2023.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2879 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/codata.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/ec2023.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"766\" height=\"468\" srcset=\"https:\/\/codata.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/ec2023.jpg 766w, https:\/\/codata.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/ec2023-300x183.jpg 300w, https:\/\/codata.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/ec2023-624x381.jpg 624w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 766px) 100vw, 766px\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<h1><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Looking forward to 2024!<\/span><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The transition from 2023 to 2024 is certainly one of dynamic change.\u00a0 CODATA has new leadership and a renewed vision.\u00a0 2024 will see the compilation of the WorldFAIR project and the launch of WorldFAIR+; we will embark on the next phase of the Global Open Science Cloud initiative; the new expanded International Data Policy Committee will pursue its action plan; and the new (and renewed) Task Groups and Working Groups will set about their activities. February will also see the launch of the Data Science Without Boundaries project in which CODATA is a partner.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Important events early in the year are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lorentzcenter.nl\/the-road-to-fair-and-equitable-science.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Road to FAIR and Equitable Science Workshop at the Lorenz Centre in Leiden, 22-26 January<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, celebrating 10 years of the FAIR principles, and the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/fairdo.org\/fdof-summit-2024\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FAIR Digital Object Summit in Berlin, 20-21 March<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0 CODATA will once again be partnering with the DDI Alliance on two workshops at Schloss Dagstuhl, to advance work on the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dagstuhl.de\/en\/seminars\/seminar-calendar\/seminar-details\/24413\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">DDI-CDI standard<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and on the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dagstuhl.de\/en\/seminars\/seminar-calendar\/seminar-details\/24423\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cross-Domain Interoperability Framework<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The CODATA Executive Committee will meet in Barcelona in October, where our new president will also host a workshop on data and AI issues for computational social sciences.\u00a0 The priority event for CODATA in 2024 will be the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/unstats.un.org\/unsd\/undataforum\/index.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">UN Data Forum in Medell\u00edn, Colombia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, where we intend to showcase a number of contributions to help make data work for global grand challenges. <\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A message from Simon Hodson, Executive Director.
