To me CODATA\u2019s National Members provide an important link to wider research communities. I would like to facilitate stronger engagement between the UK\u2019s research community and the activities of CODATA and its other members. I would also use these links to enhance my contributions to CODATA\u2019s Executive Committee. I engage closely with The Royal Society and UK Research and Innovation, who support the UK\u2019s national membership of CODATA. I am also a member of the recently established UK International Research Data Initiatives Forum. This forum aims to enhance UK engagement with international initiatives relating to research data policy and practice, including CODATA. \u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CODATA\u2019s mission and role to connect data and people to advance science and improve our world is important as ever to help address global grand challenges, including in my own domain of global disaster risk reduction.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Data is critical for the implementation of the landmark UN agreements of the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.preventionweb.net\/files\/43291_sendaiframeworkfordrren.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sendia Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and the COP21\u2019s Paris Climate Conference.\u00a0With disasters increasing in intensity and severity globally, improving risk information across all types of hazards is critical to enhance our capacity to anticipate, prevent and respond to disaster risks from the local to the global scales. One barrier to sharing and using data effectively has been the lack of standardized definitions of hazards and a lack of guidance on the full range hazards such as hydrometeorological, biological and technological hazards and societal that need to be addressed in risk management.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) and the International Science Council (ISC) jointly established a Technical Working Group (TWG) in 2019 to identify the full scope of all hazards relevant to the Sendai Framework and the scientific definitions of these hazards. I was invited to chair the TWG with strong CODATA Executive Committee representation and partnership.\u00a0 The TWG with invaluable participation from CODATA colleagues and the project secretariat engaged with scientists in many organisations and UN agency scientific partners to find out how, via consensus building, an all hazard list could best be developed.\u00a0Outputs included the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.preventionweb.net\/publication\/hazard-definition-and-classification-review\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">UNDRR-ISC Hazard Definition and Classification Review \u2013 Technical report\u00a0<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">released in July 2020, and the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.undrr.org\/publication\/hazard-information-profiles-supplement-undrr-isc-hazard-definition-classification\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hazard Information Profiles: Supplement to UNDRR-ISC Hazard Definition &amp; Classification Review \u2013 Technical Report\u00a0released<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in October 2021.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In section 5.3.1, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sendaiframework-mtr.undrr.org\/publication\/report-midterm-review-implementation-sendai-framework-disaster-risk-reduction-2015-2030\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Report of the Midterm Review of the Implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, this statement is made:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2018<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Work undertaken with the International Science Council (ISC) [and UNDRR] and the engagement of more than 800 partners from scientific institutions, including national scientific advisers [with strong CODATA Executive Committee engagement], the research funding community and numerous international organizations, led to the <\/span><\/i><b><i>groundbreaking<\/i><\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Sendai Hazard Definition and Classification Review Technical Report. The report, which contains 302 hazard information profiles, is a key tool for building common definitions for developing comparable data sets for monitoring and review. It provides a common set of hazard definitions to governments and stakeholders to inform approaches, policies and investments, whether integrated in sectoral interventions or DRR strategies and actions.\u2019<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Again, with strong CODATA Executive Committee representation,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have been <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">invited to chair the UNDRR\/ISC Steering Group for reviewing and updating the Hazard Information Profiles for the UN Global Platform on Disaster Risk Reduction to be held in May 2025.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Using the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.undrr.org\/publication\/hazard-information-profiles-hips\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">UNDRR\/ISC Hazard Information Profiles<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and working in close collaboration with CODATA Executive Committee and<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/codata.org\/initiatives\/data-policy\/international-data-policy-committee\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> IDPC<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> I am now also engaged in supporting \u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/codata.org\/events\/conferences\/fair-convergence-symposium-2022\/data-policy-in-times-of-crisis\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Data Policy in Times of Crisis &#8211; CODATA, The Committee on Data for Science and Technology<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 something that, to me, \u00a0is vital to consider building our data to manage disasters.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The implementation of this and related work remains a vital contribution that I hope, as an\u00a0ordinary member of the CODATA Executive Committee, I could continue to contribute if elected for the next two years, alongside supporting CODATA to deliver the important wider priorities identified in its Strategic Plan 2023-2027.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More widely, my current roles are as a public health doctor committed to improving health emergency and disaster risk management as well as data access and transparency for effective reporting. \u00a0I was appointed as Head of Global Disaster Risk Reduction (GDRR) for\u00a0<\/span><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/organisations\/uk-health-security-agency\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">UK Health Security Agency<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0(formerly\u00a0<\/span><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/organisations\/public-health-england\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Public Health England<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) in April 2014 and am now a development lead for the new <\/span><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/ukhsa.blog.gov.uk\/2023\/02\/08\/climate-and-health-security-looking-ahead-to-2023\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">UKHSA Centre for Climate and Health Security<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. I am a member of the<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.irdrinternational.org\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Integrated Research on Disaster Risk (IRDR)<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">scientific committee and Co-Chair of\u00a0<\/span><\/i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.irdrinternational.org\/projects\/data\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">IRDR\u2019s Disaster Loss Data (DATA)<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0I am\u00a0 a co-chair of the\u00a0<\/span><\/i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/pdfs\/journals\/lancet\/PIIS0140-6736(17)31670-7.pdf\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WHO Thematic Platform Health and Disaster Risk Management Research Network<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and by working in collaboration with this network, I am one of the editors of the\u00a0<\/span><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/extranet.who.int\/kobe_centre\/en\/project-details\/GUIDANCE_ResearchMethods_HealthEDRM\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WHO Guidance on Research Methods for Health and Disaster Risk Management<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u00a0updated 2022.
