\"IMG_4383\"<\/a>“Science is about discovering that things aren\u2019t as you expected.\u00a0 The more I learn, the more I realise I don\u2019t know.\u00a0 One of the fun things about what I do just now is that I get to see a lot of different research communities and how they conceive of and represent data, and what data mean to them.<\/p>\n

There are really a lot of different discipline-oriented communities. I come from a domain repository \u2013 we just called it a data center \u2013 and for me, it\u2019s interesting coming from that environment as opposed to the library, institution, repository, or iSchool environments, who are dealing with very similar issues and approaching them with different perspectives.<\/p>\n

I do think in some areas there is emerging consensus and that\u2019s exciting to see. The very fact that everyone accepts PIDs on data, that\u2019s almost universal, we might argue about which one, but the strong consensus is that there should be something.\u00a0 We\u2019re seeing greater convergence about metadata standards, too, particularly in my field.\u00a0 I think we\u2019re getting better at listening to each other from different domains \u2013 historians and ecologists discover they have the same data problems.\u00a0 This makes them feel they\u2019re not alone but also that their problems are generic and can have common solutions.\u00a0 There is a community.\u00a0 When I first started at a data center 25 years ago, I\u2019d be the data person at science conferences. That\u2019s not the way it works any more.<\/p>\n

We are in dire times just now.\u00a0 We seem to be in an age of growing authoritarianism, and some people are trying to pretend there isn\u2019t evidential knowledge.\u00a0 This makes research all the more important. Data sharing, open knowledge, open data, it\u2019s more important than it\u2019s ever been.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
